PATRICIA JOAN (BAUGHMAN) GRANT

HER STORY

When Patricia Joan Baughman was born on November 23, 1929, in Brookville, Pennsylvania, her father, Victor, was 29, and her mother, Sara, was 26. She had three sons and one daughter with Ralph Wayne Grant. Ralph had the nickname of Penny. Everyone called him Penny. Patricia went by Joan, her middle name, most of her life. Joan died on November 11, 2007, in Erie, Pennsylvania, at the age of 77, and was buried next to Penny in Wintergreen Gorge Cemetery, Harborcreek Township, Erie County, Pennsylvania.

Joan had four siblings. They were: Jean Baughman, Louise Baughman, Leo Baughman, and Mary Ellen Baughman. They were born in either Conifer or Brookville, Pennsylvania. Her paternal grandparents are Clover Baughman (1875-1964) and Lavina Schaffner (1878-1955). According to Mary Ellen, ‘Clover always called Lavina; “Vine.”’ Her maternal grandparents are James Monroe Painter (1875 – 1950) and Mary McIntosh (1875 – 1950).

Joan’s father worked on the railroad as a brakeman. In the 1930 US Federal Census he said he was working as a laborer at odd jobs. In 1940, he told the census taker for the US Federal Census that he was working in construction in the building industry making $640 per year. He worked in New York State in construction for the HR Baughman Company. Mary Ellen’s mother worked for the American Hotel, Frampton Diner as a cook and kitchen helper when the kids were growing up. Later, Sara worked at Sylvania until she retired.

Joan Baughman, a white female born around 1930 in Pennsylvania, was the youngest daughter of V Jay Baughman and Sara E Baughman. In 1930, Joan resided in Rose, Jefferson, Pennsylvania, along with her parents and four siblings. At the time, Joan was just an infant, being only a year old. Although she did not attend school yet, Joan was surrounded by a bustling household of seven members. Her father and mother were both born in Pennsylvania, indicating strong ties to their home state. While the specific details of Joan's life remain unknown, this snapshot of her early years provides a glimpse into the dynamics of her family and their community in Rose, Jefferson, Pennsylvania.

Based on information from the 1940 United States Federal Census
In 1940, in the small town of Brookville, Pennsylvania, a young girl named Joan Baughman, aged 10, resided with her family on Euclid Avenue. She was the daughter of Jay Baughman, a 39-year-old head of the household, and Sara Baughman, his 37-year-old wife. Joan had four siblings: Jean [not John], aged 17, Louise, aged 15, Leo, aged 13, and Mary E, aged 11.
Joan's family seemed to have deep roots in Brookville, as they had been living there since at least 1935. They did not reside on a farm, indicating that they were likely part of the town's community rather than engaged in agricultural work. Despite her young age, Joan had already attended school, suggesting a commitment to education within her family. She had completed the fourth grade, which was the highest grade she had reached at that time.

At the Easter morning service of the Presbyterian church the following persons were received into membership. On profession of faith, Mary Ellen Baughman, Martha Best, Clyde Edgar Case, Meriam Joann Case, Patricia Joan Baughman, Nancy Crawford, Howard Hughes, Betty Rishell, Patty Rishell, Georgia Ann Deiner, Molly Matson, Linda Leathers, Eugene Kroh, Paul Fleming, Esther Smith, Marcus Johns, David Summerville, Margaret White, Mr. William Plant, Mrs. Lois Galbraith; Reaffirmation of faith, Mrs. James Painter and Mrs. Ben Case; Mr. and Mrs. B.     After graduation from Brookville High School, Mary Ellen moved to Erie to attend Erie Commercial College. This College had its classes on the second floor of a building in Erie.     The 1950 US Federal Census for Welleston, St. Louis County, Missouri, has a record of the Mont and Clara EeGrand [var Eclrand] household. In the household with Mont and Clara are two daughters, son, son-in-law, mother-in-law and two roomers. The roomers were Ralph and Patricia Grant. Ralph W. Grant's relationship to the head of houshold is that of a roomer. Ralph is a white, male, twenty-four years old, married, born in Missouri. He was working forty hours per week as a service man for the gas company. Patricia N. Grant is a roomer, white, female, eighteen years of age, married, born in Missouri, keeping house and not working outside the house. [Ralph Wayne Grant was born 1 Nov 1926, in Sigel, Pennsylvania, making him 23 years, 5 months, 7 days old when this census was taken on April 8, 1950. Grant worked his whole life in the oil and gas business.] [Patricia Joan Baughman was born 23 Nov 1929, in Brookville, Pennsylvania, making her 20 years, 4 months, 16 days old when this census was taken on April 8, 1950.]

The Grant's always attended the Baughman reunions wherever they were held; whether in at the Sobol's in Brookville, a park in Erie, or somewhere in between. In fact, in later years they were often held on the Tim and Mary (Grant) Larson farm in Erie. The Larson's had a donkey, goat, llama, and several horses. They had a swimming pool and indoor facilities large enough to host the entire family in case of inclement weather. Then, there were the cousin's getaways organized by Tim and Mary Larson. Sherry Cannata, Sally Foulkrod, Brenda Baughman, Linda Baughman, Patti Dolton, Kathy Sobol, and Tim & Mary Larson went to Puerto Rico, Florida, or some other exotic location for a couple of weeks. What a joyous blessing that was for these women to get away and get together.
