Fred Smoyer Fedder
Fred Smoyer Fedder was born 8 Jun 1893, in Mifflinville, Pennsylvania, to Andrew H. Fedder and his wife Harriet Alice Smoyer. He lived in Mifflinsville until he went into the service for World War I in 1917.
The 1920 US Federal Census for Stroudsburg, Monroe, PA, finds Fred Smoyer Fedder and his wife Anna (Geissinger) Fedder living in the household of her parents Oscar and Martha Geissinger. On 9 Feb 1934, in his filing for Veteran's compensation with the state of Pennsylvania, Fred indicated that he had three children: Fred, Harriet, and Gele. In that same filing he indicated that he did not have a living wife so Anna died before 1934.
Fred Smoyer Fedder served as a private with the 256th Aero Squadron from 7 Dec 1917 to 17 Dec 1918. He served both in CONUS and overseas.
In the 1930 US Federal Census Fred's sons Fred and Gele were living in the household of their grandparents Andrew and Harriet (Smoyer) Fedder. Gele lived with them throughout his childhood.
Fred's son Fred Geissinger Fedder returned to live with his father and setp-mother Vivian (McManigle) Fedder prior to the 1940 US Federal Census. According to the 1930 US Federal Census for Stroudsburg, Monroe, PA, Fred's daughter Harriet M. Fedder was living with her mother's parents Oscar and Martha (Nauman) Geissinger. Harriet lived with her grandparents throughout her childhood. Fred Smoyer Fedder died 15 Nov 1972 in Saint Marys, Elk County, Pennsylvania.

HER STORY
Vivian Marie McManigle was my wife’s aunt and was known to her. However, she didn’t really know her aunt.
The Pennsylvania birth certificate for Florence Viola Farrell's first child indicates that it was a female, born in the Elk County, township of Benezette, Registration District No. 486, Primary Registration District No. 2621, Registered No. 166. Florence's residence was Dents Run, Pa., she was white, nineteen years of age, born in Dents Run, Pa. and her occupation was housework. The childs full name was Marie Farrell. She was the first in order of birth, was not legitimate, and was born Oct. 11th, 1909. The father was Harvey Mcmanigal of Dents Run, Pa. He was a white male, nineteen years of age, born in Pennsylvania, and his occupation was laborer in saw mill. B. E. Merrill, M. D., of Dents Run, Pa., signed the certificate indicating that the birth occurred on Oct. 11th, 1909, at 7 P. M. The certificate was filed Nov 9th, 1909 with F. M. Bunch, Registrar.
Vivian’s parents were Harvey Herbert McManigle (1890-1970) and Florence Viola Farrell (1890-1983). Vivian’s paternal grandparents were Solomon Ellsworth McManigle, Jr. (1861-1934) and Martha Malinda Swartz (1864-1932). Vivian’s maternal grandparents were Patrick Henry Farrell (1855-1934) and Margaret O’Neill (1860-1930).
The 1910 US Federal Census for Benezette, Elk County, Pennsylvania, has a record of the Patrick and Mary Furl [sic] [Ferrell] household. Patrick Ferrell was a white male, 54 years of age, married once, married for fifteen years. He was born in Pennsylvania and his parents in the United States. He is working as a carpenter in a lumber mill. Mary Ferrell, his wife, was a white, female, 47 years of age, married twice, married for fifteen years, gave birth to six children of whom six are living. She and her parents were born in Pennsylvania. Frank Ferrell, son of Patrick, male, white, eleven years of age. Dortha, daughter, white, 13 years of age. Florence McManigal, daughter, white, twenty years of age, married once, years married zero, one child born and still living. Vivian McManigal, grand-daughter, female, white, six months old. All in this household were born in Pennsylvania.
The 1920 US Federal Census for Rose, Jefferson County, Pennsylvania, has a record of the H. H. and Florence McManigal [sic] [McManigle] household. Harvey Herbert McManigle was the head of household and was renting the house they lived in. He was white, twenty-eight years of age, married, able to read and write. He was working as a laborer in furniture building. Florence McManigle, his wife, a white, female, twenty-eight years of age. Vivian McManigle, daughter of Harvey, was a white, female, ten years old. Carman McManigle, son [sic] [daughter], she was seven years old. Evelyn McManigle, daughter of Harvey, was four years eight months old. Carl McManigle, son, was one year four months old. All in this household and their parents were born in Pennsylvania.
According to the 1930 US Federal Census for Emporium, Cameron County, Pennsylvania, Vivian McManigle and Hazel Ford were boarders in the home of Fred Fedder whom Vivian later married. Fred Fetter [sic] [Fedder] was a white, male, thirty-six-year-old widower. He had been twenty-five years old at the time of his marriage. Fred was working as a watchmaker at a jewelry store. Hazle Ford was a white, female, eighteen years of age, working as an operator providing radio info. Vivian McMangel [sic] [McManigle] was a twenty-year-old, white, female, working as a clerk in a jewelry store. At this time Fred Fedder's sons by his first wife, Anna Geissinger, Fred Jr. (born abt 1921) and Gele Emile (born abt 1929) Fedder, were living with their grandparents, Andrew H. and Hattie A. Fedder, in Mifflin, Columbia, Pennsylvania.
Vivian Marie McManigle married Fred Smoyer Fedder 21 March 1938 in Kittanning, Armstrong County, Pennsylvania. The 1940 US Federal Census shows the household of Fred and Vivian Fedder and their son Fred Fedder Jr. But Gele continued to live with his grandparents and in the 1940 US Federal Census is shown still living with his grandmother, Hattie Fedder, in Mifflin.
In the obituary of her father Harvey McManigle (published in The Brookville American), who died 11 Sep 1970, "Vivian, wife of Fred Sedder [sic] of St. Marys" is listed as a survivor. In the obituary of Florence (Farrell) McManigle (published in The Brookville American), who died 29 Jul 1983, Vivian is listed as having preceded Florence in death. According to the Social Security Death Index Vivian died in St Marys, Elk County, Pennsylvania, in August 1982. Vivian M.
