HER STORY
Vivian Marie McManigle was my wife’s aunt and was known to her. However, she didn’t really know her aunt.
Carmen's birth certificate indicates her full name was Carmen E. McManigal. She was female, legitimate, born April 2, 1912. Her parents were Ham H. McManigal of Dents Run, Pa., a white twenty-two year old man born in Pennsylvania and making a living as a Lumber Counter. Carmen's mother was Flora F. Farrell of Dents Run, Pa. Flora was a white, female, age twenty-two years, born in Pennsylvania. Her occupation was housekeeper. The attending physician was V. K. Corbett. of Driftwood, Pa., who certified that the child was born April 22, 1912, at 2:30 P. M. The birth certificate was file June 10, 1913 by W. H. Weed, Registrar.
Carmen's parents were Harvey Herbert McManigle (1890-1970) and Florence Viola Farrell (1890-1983). Carmen's paternal grandparents were Solomon Ellsworth McManigle, Jr. (1861-1934) and Martha Malinda Swartz (1864-1932). Carmen's maternal grandparents were Patrick Henry Farrell (1855-1934) and Margaret O’Neill (1860-1930).
In the 1920 US Federal Census for Rose, Jefferson County, Pennsylvania, on Belgiumtown street, is a record of the H. H. and Florence McManigal household. Harvey Herbert McManigal was a 28-year-old male, born about 1892 in Pennsylvania. He was a white, male, married, working as a wage laborer in a furniture factory, and they rented their home. His parents were born in Pennsylvania. Florence Mcmanigal was a 28-year-old male [sic]. Varline [sic] [her name was Vivian] McManigal was a ten-year-old daughter. Carmen McManigal was a seven-year-old son [sic] [Carmen was a daughter], born about 1913 in Pennsylvania. She was single, had attended the school in the last year, and could read and write. Evelyn Mcmanigal was a four-year-old daughter. Carl Mcmanigal was a one-year-old son. Everyone in this household, and their parents, were born in Pennsylvania.

The 1930 US Federal Census for Pine Creek, Jefferson County, Pennsylvania, was conducted April 10, 1930, by Clark R. Stahlman, Enumerator. He found the Harvey and Florence McManigal household at home there. Harve H. Mcmanigal was a 40-year-old male, white, and had been married 20 years. He could read and speak English and was working as a laborer in a Brick Plant. Florence V. Mcmanigal was a 39-year-old female. Carmen A. Mcmanigal was a white, female, eighteen years of age, single, working as a servant with a private family. Evelyn L. Mcmanigal was a 14-year-old female and was attending school. Carl S. Mcmanigl was and 11-year-old male and was attending school. Wayne I McManigal was a five-year-old male. Mary J. Mcmanigal was a three-year-old female. They did not have a radio set in the house. All the members of this house and their parents were born in Pennsylvania.

The 1940 US Federal Census for Cranberry, Vanango, Pennsylvania, has a record of the William and Carmen Yates household. William J. Yates was 31 years old. William was working as a roustabout in the natural gas business. He worked about 42 hours per week 52 weeks per year. Carmen Yates was 22 years old. Helen Yates, William's daughter, was nine years old and attending school. Jack Yates, William's son, was six years old and attending school. Their residence city in 1935 was Brookville, Jefferson County, Pennsylvania. All were born in Pennsylvania.
The 1950 US Federal Census for Saint Marys, Elk County, Pennsylvania, had a record of the family of William Yates and Carmen Yates. William Yates was a 41 year old male. He was a foreman with the Gas Company. Carmen Yates was a 38-year-old female; born about 1912 in Pennsylvania; married and keeping house for the family. Helen Yates was a 19 year old female and worked forty hours per week in the radio office at the carbon plant. Jack Yates was a 16-year-old male. I think Jack must still have been in school.

Obituary Mrs. Carmen McManigle Yates, newspaper unknown, May 1989 . Carmen E. Yates of St. Marys died Tuesday May 9, 1989 at her home following a brief illness. She was 77 years of age. Mrs. Yates was born on a farm in Dents Run on April 2, 1912. She was the daughter of Harvey and Florence (Farrell) McManigle. She was married to William J. Yates who preceded his wife in death on April 21, 1988. Surviving is one daughter, Helen Winslow of Kersey; one son, W. Jack Yates of Meadville; four grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; two sisters, Mrs. Evelyn Strawcutter of Kane and Mrs. Mary Jane Cyone of Brookville. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, one sister, Mrs. Vivian Fedder and two brothers, Carl and Wayne McManigle. Funeral services were held on Friday, May 12 at a St. Marys funeral home by the Rev. Frank Sherman, pastor of the First United Methodist Church. Interment followed in the Parklawn cemetery in Ridgway.
Carmen was born in 1912 and died in 1989. She was buried in Parklawn Memorial Gardens, Ridgway, Elk County, Pennsylvania. [Find A Grave, memorial 151139521]
