HER STORY

When Mary Jane McManigle was born on May 25, 1926, in Brookville, Pennsylvania, her father, Harvey, was 36, and her mother, Florence, was 35. She married Victor George Cyone on July 19, 1961, in Brandy Camp, Pennsylvania. She died on March 15, 2006, in her hometown at the age of 79, and was buried there.

The 1930 US Federal Census for Pine Creek, Jefferson County, Pennsylvania, has a record of the Harvey and Florence Mcmanigal [sic] [] household. Mary J Mcmanigal, a white female, was born in Pennsylvania around 1927. In 1930, at the age of 3, she lived in Pine Creek, Jefferson, Pennsylvania, USA, with her family. Mary was the daughter of Harvey H Mcmanigal, who was 40 years old at the time, and Florence V Mcmanigal, who was 39. Mary had four siblings: Carmen A (18), Evelyn L (14), Carl S (11), and Wayne I (5). Mary did not attend school at this time. The entire household consisted of seven members.

Based on information from the 1940 United States Federal Census
Mary Jane McMaingle, a 13-year-old white female, was born around 1927 in Pennsylvania. She is single and resides in Pine Creek, Jefferson, Pennsylvania, with her family. Their home is located on Takes-To-Sea Highway Route 322. In 1935, Mary Jane also lived in Pine Creek and did not reside on a farm.
Mary Jane attends school and has completed up to the 8th grade in elementary school. She lives with her parents, Harve and Florence McMaingle, who are 50 and 49 years old, respectively. Her older brothers, Carl (21) and Wayne (15), also share the household.

In 1941 while attending Brookville High School, according to the yearbook for that year, Mary Jane McManigle and her brother Wayne were on the student newspaper staff. That year, according to an article in the Brookville American, Mary Jane also had an unblemished attendance record.[Brookville American, 17 Jul 1941, Pg 1]

In 1943 while attending Brookville High School, according to the yearbook for that year, Mary Jane McManigle was among twenty-three students who volunteered as librarians. Mary Jane's photos in her yearbooks reveal a young woman who was very fair of face.

Based on information from the 1950 US Federal Census:
Mary J McManigle, a 23-year-old white female, was born in Pennsylvania around 1927. In 1950, she resided in Brookville, Jefferson, Pennsylvania, USA, specifically on White St. at Apartment Number 132. Mary was the daughter of Harvey H McManigle, who was 61 years old at the time, and Florence V McManigle, who was 60 years old. Mary had two siblings: Wayne I McManigle, her 25-year-old brother, and another sister whose name is not provided.
Mary worked as a Utility Operator at Sylvania Electric Products, a private company. She worked 40 hours a week, indicating her dedication to her job. However, it is worth noting that Mary's occupation category is listed as "Working," suggesting that she may not have held a high-ranking position within the company.

Aunt Mary Jane and Victor Cyone lived together until death seperated them. They traveled down to Florida to visit family down there until Mary Jane's health made those long trips too uncomfortable. The McManigles were a close family and held regular reunions in the summer at a public park or private grounds where they could accommodate the whole family. Some of the family drove over a thousand miles to come to these reunions. There were always lots of kids so they liked to have the reunion where there was something for them to do. Sometimes the reunion was used to celebrate a significant anniversary of the wedding of Harve and Florence.

After they stopped having these reunions, the McManigle family visited around and sometimes got together for Christmas, but after the 1960's they didn't get together for family reunions. Wayne McManigle having married into the Baughman family and Mary Jane Cyone having always been very close to her brother Wayne, they always went to the annual Baughman reunions. The Cyone's might not go if it was held up in Erie though, it being a long drive from Brookville.

Vic dealt in used cars; buying, selling and transporting them. If he heard about a good deal who would go see how good a deal it was and might buy one or more cars for resale. If someone needed a car delivered, then he might deliver it for them. The Cyone's always had very nice cars and Vic always did the driving. Mary Jane was alone a good deal. Vic was very good to her and loved her family. Speaking of family, there were consistent rumors that Vic had connections to the Italien mafia. Rumors he did nothing to put to rest. One time at a family wedding there were some uninvited guests who got a little out of hand. Vic disappeared for a little while and when he returned he brought some hard men with him who had no trouble convincing the trouble makers to relocate their party.

Mary Jane was a very attractive girl and woman. I don't know why she didn't get married until she was thirty-five years old. She dressed well and was quite feminine. She could flirt for the camera and was always smiling. As she got into her fifties she had trouble with her joints. I'm sure it must have been painful for her. She smoked but I don't think she did several packs a day and she was courteous of others. She and Vic never had children.
