HER STORY
Evelyn Lucille McManigle was born 16 May, 1915 in Brookville, Jefferson County, Pennsylvania. She married Ray E. Strawcutter 05 Feb 1933 and they had six children. Evelyn died 05 Jan 2012 at the Lutheran Home in Kane, Pennsylvania.
The 1920 US Federal Census for Rose Township, Jefferson County, Pennsylvania, has the following record for the H.H. McManigal family. It lists Harve as the head of household, a white, male age 28 years. It indicates that he is able to read and write and was born in Pennsylvania as were his parents. He told the census taker that he was a laborer working in a furniture factory. His wife Florence McManigal was a white, female, 28 years of age, who indicated that she could both read and write. She was born in Pennsylvania as were her parents. There were four children in the household: Vivian McManigal was a ten year old daughter born in Pennsylvania; Carmen McManigal was a seven year old daughter (the census erroneously lists Carmen as a son) born in Pennsylvania; Evelyn McManigal was four years and eight months old, a daughter born in Pennsylvania; and Carl McManigal was one year and six months old, a son born in Pennsylvania.
The 1930 US Federal Census for Pine Creek, Jefferson County, Pennsylvania, was conducted April 10, 1930, by Clark R. Stahlman, Enumerator. He found the Harvey and Florence McManigal household at home there. Harve H. Mcmanigal was a 40-year-old male, white, and had been married 20 years. He could read and speak English and was working as a laborer in a Brick Plant. Florence V. Mcmanigal was a 39-year-old female. Carmen A. Mcmanigal was a white, female, eighteen years of age, single, working as a servant with a private family. Evelyn L. Mcmanigal was a 14-year-old female and was attending school. Carl S. Mcmanigal was and 11-year-old male and was attending school. Wayne I McManigal was a five-year-old male. Mary J. Mcmanigal was a three-year-old female. They did not have a radio set in the house. All the members of this house and their parents were born in Pennsylvania.
The US Federal Census for the year 1940 has a record of the Ray and Evelyn Drawentter [sic] [Strawcutter] family in Rose, Jefferson County, Pennsylvania. Ray Strawcutter was a twenty-seven-year old, white, male, working as a laborer in a saw mill. Evelyn, the wife of Ray, was a twenty-five-year old, white, female. Ann Strawcutter, Ray's daughter, was a six-year-old white, female. Jacqueline M. Strawcutter was a five-year-old, white, female. Everyone in the household was born in Pennsylvania and in 1935 were living in Brookville, Jefferson County, Pennsylvania. Irvin Strawcutter, son of Ray, was a white, male, four years of age.
About 1941 the family moved to Kane. Kane is a borough in McKean County in the U.S. state of Pennsylvania, 94 miles east by southeast of Erie. Ray was a driller by occupation and the company he was working for was operating in the Renovo-Driftwood area a couple of hours southeast of Kane. When the company opened up a new area of operation near Ripley, West Virginia, he went down there to work. So, all in all he wasn't seeing much of his family in the months before his death. Weeks after he started work down there, he was killed in a truck rollover in a vehicle driven by another man as they went to get supplies. Three of their six children were still at home. Ray had left Evelyn with a small veterans pension but she had to work to make ends meet. She lived the rest of her life in Kane.
