McManigle (1918-1974), Wayne Irvin McManigle (1924-1973), and Mary Jane McManigle (1926-2006).

Harve and Florence were members of the Port Barnett Methodist Church. They are not listed in the history of the Church, but were known to have been members there for most of their lives.
World War I draft card
The registrar indicated on the card that Harvey was tall, of medium build, with blue eyes, dark hair, not bald, and had not lost an arm, leg, eye or found to be otherwise disabled. This card is dated June 5, 1917.
The 1920 US Federal Census for Rose Township, Jefferson County, Pennsylvania, has the following record for the H.H. McManigal family. It lists Harve as the head of household, a white, male age 28 years. It indicates that he is able to read and write and was born in Pennsylvania as were his parents. He told the census taker that he was a laborer working in a furniture factory. His wife Florence McManigal was a white, female, 28 years of age, who indicated that she could both read and write. She was born in Pennsylvania as were her parents. There were four children in the household: Vivian McManigal was a ten year old daughter born in Pennsylvania; Carmen McManigal was a seven year old daughter (the census erroneously lists Carmen as a son) born in Pennsylvania; Evelyn McManigal was four years and eight months old, a daughter born in Pennsylvania; and Carl McManigal was one year and six months old, a son born in Pennsylvania.
Harvey was a tall handsome man with even features, an oval face, and a strong chin. From childhood he wore his short hair combed up in the front giving the appearance of a high forehead (Maw called it a cow-lick). He dressed up to go to church on Sunday and looked good in his dark suit, white shirt and fancy tie. Harvey preferred braces (suspenders) to a belt at home and at work. He enjoyed a pipe from time to time.
Florence was a pretty woman throughout her life. She had a round face and thin lips. She wore her ample hair back and wore glasses. Florence was slender and the shortest member of her family. She favored gingham and was usually in her apron when at home. She enjoyed pretty shoes even around the house. But, she had very nice clothes with decorations on the arms and bodice that she wore on special occasions.
The 1930 US Federal Census for Pennsylvania, Jefferson, Pine Creek, District 20, page 9 has a record of the following family for Harvey H. McManigal (sic.), head of household, white male, age 43. He indicated he owned his own home and valued it at $600. The home was not located on a farm. Harve said he was twenty years old when he and Florence were first married. He indicated that he had not attended school or college since September 1, 1929, but that he could read and write. He said he was employed as a laborer at a brick plant. Florence McManigal was listed as the wife in this household. She was a white female age 33, born in Pennsylvania, and she married at age 19. There were five children listed in the household: Carmen A. McManigal, single daughter, age 18, born in Pennsylvania, tells the census taker she is a private family servant (Do you think she was having a bad day?); Evalyn L. McManigal, single daughter, age 14, born in Pennsylvania; Carl S. McManigal, an eleven year old son born in Pennsylvania; Wayne I. McManigal, a five year old son born in Pennsylvania; and Mary J. McManigal, a three year old daughter born in Pennsylvania.
World War II Draft Card
The draft registration card for Harvey Herbert McManigle said that he was five foot ten inches tall, 162 pounds, had grey hair, brown eyes, a light complexion, and a scar from an appendectomy. It indicated he was 52 years of age, born in Lanes Milles, Jefferson County, on March 20, 1890. He lists his phone number as the Brookville Exchange number 707M. He gave the name Florence McManigle at R.D. #1, Brookville, who would know his address. He was working for the Humphrey Brick-Tile Company. The card is dated April 27, 1942.
The McManigles were a close family and held regular reunions in the summer at a public park or private grounds where they could accommodate the whole family. Some of the family drove over a thousand miles to come to these reunions. There were always lots of kids so they liked to have the reunion where there was something for them to do. Sometimes the reunion was used to celebrate a significant anniversary of the wedding of Harve and Florence.
Havey's obituary follows: Harvey H. McManigle of 6 South Pickering Street, Brookville, died Friday, September 11, 1970 in Brookville Hospital. Harve was born in Lanes Mills, March 20, 1890; he was the son of Solomon E. and Martha (Swartz) McManigle. He was married in 1909 to Florence Farrell, of Dents Run, Elk County. Mr. McManigle had been employed by Humphrey Industries. Humphrey Industries made charcoal. He was a member of the Port Barnett Methodist Church. [The Brookville American, 11/14/1970]
Harvey was survived by his wife and six children: Vivian, wife of Fred Sedder of St. Mary's; Carmen, wife of WJ Yates of St. Mary's; Evelyn Strawcutter of Kane; Carl M. McManigle, of Seneca Falls, NY, Wayne McManigle of Shawnee, OK; Mary Jane McManigle, wife of Victor Cyone, of Brookville. Ten grandchildren and fifteen great-grandchildren survive as do two sisters. Mrs. Luella Bish, of Mayport, and Lillian Ozman, of California.
From the inscription on his tombstone, it is believed that Harvey served in the Great War (World War I). [Ref: Headstone, 1980, Winslow Township, Jefferson County, Pennsylvania. "McManigle, Harvey H. 1890 - 1970 (WWI) Florence Farrell, 1890 -"] This is the only documentation supporting his service. He did register for the draft for both world wars.
In the last years before she died, Florence lived in an apartment above a bar on Barnett Street, just south of the river, in Brookville. This must have been a difficult place to live and she was very lonely. Whenever, her granddaughter would leave after a visit Florence would weep bitterly and say that she was sure it was the last time she would see this loved one. Finally, she couldn't live alone any longer and she became a guest at the Jefferson Manor. Florence died there on Friday, July 29, 1983, at the age of 92. She was born in Dents Run on December 20, 1890; she was a daughter of the late Patrick H. and Mary Farrell. [Ref: The Brookville American, August 2, 1983]
