JOHN CALVIN DOLTON

By: Louis Dolton, Jr., Topeka, Kansas

John Calvin Dolton was born 28 Jan 1871 in DeKalb County, Missouri, to Joseph and Sarah (Thornton) Dolton. He was the fifth of eight children born to Joseph and Sarah. When he was born his father, Joseph, was 30 and his mother, Sarah, was 32. John lived all of his short life in DeKalb County where he was born. His father was a farmer and all of his brothers turned out to be farmers for at least part of their life. If John had lived he would likely have been a farmer. There was a trend in the family that members of the family didn't like or use their first given name. Some of John's aunts and uncles, a couple of his siblings, and several of his nephews used their middle names or diminuitives of their given names (i.e. Edward was Ransom and William was Bill). John might have preferred Calvin or Cal. John never went to school or had a girl friend. Instead of all the things he might have done he died Oct 26, 1872, aged 1 yr 8 mo's & 28 ds. The sentiment on his tombstone said, "The little baby is gone to rest, To reign with God forever blest."
